Indonesia strengthens disaster preparedness amid rising natural threats
Indonesia is facing a series of natural disasters, prompting calls for strengthened national preparedness. Recent incidents include forest and land fires in Aceh, Belitung Timur, Sukabumi, and Aceh Besar, as well as significant earthquake impacts in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
In response to these threats, the Padang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has confirmed that 32 tsunami early warning systems (EWS) and 6 flood EWS units are fully operational across strategic locations in Padang. Meanwhile, in Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, authorities are coordinating with the military to implement specialized strategies and monitor hotspots to combat forest fires.
During a recent discussion on rising seismic activity, Deputy Chair of the MPR RI, Lestari Moerdijat, emphasized the need for adaptive infrastructure, improved disaster literacy, and better educational systems to mitigate systemic risks in densely populated areas.
