Paderborn clinic investigation after premature infant death

Prosecutors have launched an investigation following the death of a premature infant at the St. Louise children's clinic in Paderborn, Germany. The incident occurred on a neonatal intensive care unit where an Enterobacter bacterium was identified in four children.

According to the St. Vincenz clinic group, two of the infants developed severe sepsis. One premature baby died on Tuesday despite intensive medical treatment. While one other infant was in critical condition, their status had stabilized by Sunday. The remaining two infants showed no symptoms of illness.

The public prosecutor's office has initiated a death investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the infant's passing. An autopsy has been performed, and microbiological examinations are being conducted to confirm if the intestinal bacterium was the cause of death. Authorities are also working with the Paderborn district health office to review hygiene standards and sterilization procedures at the facility. At this time, no investigation into negligent homicide against clinic officials has been opened.
