Enterobacter outbreak at Paderborn children's clinic

Overview

An outbreak of Enterobacter bacterium infections at the St. Louise Children's Clinic neonatal intensive care unit in Paderborn, Germany, led to the suspension of new admissions. The St. Vincenz Kliniken reported that four premature infants tested positive for the bacterium. Of these, two developed severe sepsis, resulting in one death and one infant entering critical condition, though the latter later stabilized. The remaining two infants remained asymptomatic.

Following the death of one infant, prosecutors initiated a death investigation to determine the exact circumstances. While an autopsy and microbiological examinations are underway to confirm if the bacterium caused the death, authorities have not opened an investigation into negligent homicide against clinic officials. The investigation includes a review of hygiene standards and sterilization procedures in coordination with the Paderborn district health office.
