Paju City pushes for Subway Line 3 extension following citizen petition

More than 10,000 citizens have signed a petition in Gyeonggi Province demanding the extension of Subway Line 3 to Paju. Because the petition surpassed the 10,000-signature threshold, the Governor of Gyeonggi Province is now required to provide a direct response.

Unlike previous initiatives, this petition was noted for being a spontaneous movement proposed by citizens rather than a government-led effort. Paju City officials stated they intend to use this momentum to move beyond mere planning. While the immediate goal is to have the extension included in the 5th National Railway Network Plan, the city aims to prepare for subsequent stages, such as government feasibility studies, to ensure the project reaches actual construction.

The extension is considered a key project to address rapid urban growth in the northwestern Seoul metropolitan area and to improve transportation conditions for residents in areas like Unjeong New Town. Paju Mayor Son Bae-chan emphasized that the city will work closely with Gyeonggi Province and relevant agencies to ensure the project transitions from a political promise to a practical reality.
