Gyeonggi Province subway extension movements

Citizens in Gyeonggi Province are organizing movements to expand subway infrastructure to address urban growth and regional regulations.

In Uijeongbu, the Uijeongbu Citizens’ Committee for the Extension of Subway Line 8 has launched a campaign to include the extension in the government’s 5th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transport Implementation Plan. The committee, aiming for 100,000 signatures, argues the extension is a “necessary fulfillment of state responsibility” to compensate for regulations on northern metropolitan areas. They have planned rallies and demonstrations to pressure the central government before the plan is finalized in November.

Simultaneously, in Paju, a spontaneous citizen petition demanding the extension of Subway Line 3 has gathered over 10,000 signatures. This threshold requires a direct response from the Governor of Gyeonggi Province. Paju City officials intend to use this momentum to advocate for the project’s inclusion in the 5th National Railway Network Plan and to move toward government feasibility studies.
