Pakistan addresses AI and international security at UN Security Council
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, participated in a United Nations Security Council briefing regarding artificial intelligence and international security. The session, chaired by France, included high-level representatives from several nations, including Denmark, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the United Kingdom, as well as officials from the United States White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Industry leaders and experts, including Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Clément Delangue of Hugging Face, and Yoshua Bengio of the UN International Panel on AI, provided insights. Dar emphasized the necessity of maintaining ‘human judgment and control’ throughout the design and integration of AI. He warned against AI becoming a new element in an arms race and called for restraint to mitigate risks related to miscalculations and accelerated decision-making in military contexts.
Furthermore, Dar stated that AI regulation should not become a new form of access control or a tool that hinders technological access for others. He advocated for AI governance to be managed through representative and inclusive platforms with universal participation.
