Imran Khan: Supreme Court orders hospital transfer amid government challenge

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the transfer of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment. The court directed that a medical board of five specialists be formed to examine the 73-year-old leader, and that his personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Uzma Khan, be permitted to participate in his care.

Medical reports submitted by the Adiala Jail superintendent indicate that Khan is experiencing severe anxiety at a 'level 3+' and exhibiting panic symptoms. His vital signs recorded a blood pressure of 140/80 and a pulse rate of 54 per minute.

The Islamabad administration has filed a review petition challenging the court’s directive. The government argues that the order exceeds judicial jurisdiction and violates the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, which govern the movement of inmates for medical care. Officials warned that allowing a convicted prisoner to receive treatment at a private hospital could set a precedent that disrupts the criminal justice system and creates inequality among inmates. The government maintains that Khan will be provided with necessary medical care at government hospitals if his condition requires treatment unavailable in prison.
