Pakistan electricity tariffs face volatility amid NEPRA reviews

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is managing complex tariff adjustments that impact electricity consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric customers in Karachi. While NEPRA recently reduced K-Electric’s allowed average base tariff from Rs39.97 to Rs32.37 per unit, the benefits may not reach households and factories due to the uniform consumer tariff policy. This reduction raises concerns that weakened financial footing for the utility could lead to decreased maintenance and investment, potentially worsening existing service issues and unannounced load-shedding.

Simultaneously, NEPRA is scheduled to hear a request from the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G) to increase electricity charges by approximately Rs1.73 per unit. This request stems from August fuel cost adjustments, driven by high generation costs from high-speed diesel, furnace oil, and imported LNG. If approved, this increase would apply to consumers nationwide, potentially offsetting previous tariff reductions.
