Pakistan Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb seeks improved credit rating and multilateral support

On the sidelines of the World Bank Group and IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a series of high-level meetings with international financial institutions to discuss economic reforms and infrastructure financing.

Aurangzeb met with representatives from the IMF, AIIB, OPEC Fund, IFC, and S&P Global Ratings. Key discussions included seeking a sovereign credit rating upgrade to the double-B category, following a recent upgrade to B by S&P. He highlighted Pakistan’s achievement of three consecutive years of primary fiscal surpluses, increased foreign exchange reserves, and a declining debt-to-GDP ratio.

Infrastructure and energy security were central themes. Discussions with the AIIB and OPEC Fund focused on power transmission projects and the M6 motorway. The Minister also engaged with the IFC regarding the Reko Diq project and private sector involvement in the livestock and water sectors. Additionally, Aurangzeb met with U.S. officials to discuss bilateral economic cooperation, including trade frameworks and energy diversification.
