Pakistan government and opposition begin second round of political talks

The second round of political negotiations between the Pakistani federal government, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and opposition parties including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) commenced on Saturday. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is presiding over the talks at the Parliament House in Islamabad to address rising political tensions.

The discussions follow a first round held on Friday, which was described as having a “very cordial atmosphere.” The negotiations aim to resolve a standoff that includes PTI’s planned long march toward Islamabad, originally scheduled for October 4. PTI representatives, including Barrister Gohar, have expressed a desire to avoid extreme measures such as the imposition of emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, though they maintain their intent to proceed with the march unless core demands are met.

Key opposition demands include the release of PTI founder Imran Khan and other prisoners, the restoration of the Constitution, and the transfer of Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the opposition to end the long march in favor of a written agreement with the government. Zardari also emphasized the need for national unity to combat terrorism, which he characterized as a threat to Pakistan’s survival, alleging external support for such activities.
