Imran Khan hospital transfer sparks legal dispute in Pakistan
A legal and political dispute has emerged in Pakistan following the Supreme Court's order to transfer incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. While the court ordered the transfer, the government instead moved Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) during the night of August 20-21.
Government officials, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, defended the move to PIMS, citing security concerns and the need to review the situation with security agencies. Following a medical examination by a multidisciplinary team, officials stated Khan was declared medically fit and was returned to Adiala Jail on the morning of August 21.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has strongly rejected these justifications, accusing the government of deliberately violating the Supreme Court's order. PTI leaders, including Asad Qaiser and Sheikh Waqas Akram, have indicated plans to file contempt of court petitions. Meanwhile, the federal government has filed a new criminal review petition to the Supreme Court, arguing that allowing high-profile prisoners to choose private hospitals could set a precedent that violates prison rules.
