Pakistan imposes emergency and governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
President Asif Ali Zardari has officially imposed emergency rule and governor's rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, suspending the provincial government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The decision, made under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, follows a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The federal government cited a deteriorating security situation and the provincial administration's alleged failure to combat rising terrorism as the primary justifications. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar further alleged that the PTI-led government maintained a “nexus” with terrorist groups, claiming the provincial administration was “hand in glove” with militants.
Under the new regime, provincial authority shifts to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, who will be supported by an 11-member advisory council. Administrative changes have already begun, including the appointment of Dr. Muhammad Fakhar Alam Irfan as the new Chief Secretary. Additionally, the Pakistan Army has been authorized to deploy in the province to assist in maintaining law and order and protecting critical infrastructure.
The PTI has rejected the move, labeling it unconstitutional and a political maneuver to undermine the democratic mandate of the province. The party has vowed to continue its struggle through legal, parliamentary, and public protests.
