Pakistan increases fuel prices amid global energy volatility
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has increased petroleum prices in Pakistan, effective August 19, 2026. Motor Spirit (petrol) rose by Rs 3.34 to Rs 334.54 per litre, while High Speed Diesel (HSD) increased by Rs 5.27 to Rs 395.69 per litre.
These adjustments are part of a daily pricing strategy implemented to mitigate extreme market volatility caused by global energy disruptions. The crisis stems from heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, including maritime blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and military strikes. Such geopolitical instability has significantly impacted global oil shipments and supply.
Economists note that Pakistan's heavy reliance on imported petroleum—importing approximately $14 to $18 billion annually—leaves the domestic market highly vulnerable to international price fluctuations. Experts suggest that long-term stability requires investment in local refineries and the promotion of alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on foreign fuel.
