PTI long march begins as negotiations with federal government collapse
Political tensions in Pakistan have escalated as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) launched a long march towards Islamabad, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The march, which has moved through districts like Lakki Marwat and Karak, aims to demand the release of jailed party founder Imran Khan.
Negotiations between the PTI and the federal government ended in a deadlock after failing to reach an agreement on key issues, including access to Imran Khan and military operations in KP. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused Chief Minister Afridi of attempting to sabotage the talks by altering draft agreements. Conversely, Afridi alleged that decision-makers in “closed rooms” undermined the negotiations to maintain control over the province.
The federal government has declared the security situation in KP to be “at war” and is considering imposing an emergency or governor’s rule in the province. Naqvi also warned that using official government resources, such as helicopters, for the protest march would violate court decisions and stated that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to storm the federal capital.
