Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi Calls for New Administrative Units, PPP Urges Pause
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned that Pakistan’s existing governance system has collapsed and urged political parties to reach a consensus on creating new administrative units or provinces to improve governance. He argued that without structural reforms the country will remain stagnant for years.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) responded with caution. Vice President Sherry Rehman said the debate should not be taken further until a concrete proposal is presented, while the party’s Central Executive Committee plans to deliberate the issue. PPP secretary‑general Nayyar Bokhari emphasized that any new province must be created through the constitutional process requiring a two‑thirds majority in the relevant assemblies, not by executive order.
The military’s media wing, ISPR, clarified that decisions on new provinces are a political matter and lie outside the armed forces’ jurisdiction. Separately, Naqvi also warned that Pakistan’s economic crisis cannot be solved by taking on more debt, attributing the fiscal strain to decades of governance failures.
