Security is being heavily ramped up in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ahead of planned long marches by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on September 27 and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). Authorities have deployed over 22,000 security personnel in Islamabad and 30,000 in the Attock district to manage potential unrest. To prevent protesters from entering the twin cities, officials have used approximately 1,000 shipping containers to block 30 entry points.

In preparation for the influx of security forces, 24 educational institutions in Islamabad have suspended academic activities to provide accommodation for police personnel. In Rawalpindi, police have requested the closure of dozens of schools to house arriving officers. Additionally, the Capital City Police Officer in Rawalpindi has banned all police leave until October 1.

Tensions have risen following inflammatory rhetoric from PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Junaid Akbar, who stated the party would ‘turn Islamabad into Somnath’ and approach the capital through multiple routes, including the motorway and Margalla Hills. Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry warned that while peaceful protests are permitted, the state will act against those attempting to create anarchy or violence. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami is organizing a march to protest petroleum product levies.
