Pakistan braces for PTI long march on Islamabad
Pakistan is bracing for a major political confrontation as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepares for a nationwide protest and long march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27. The party's primary demand is the immediate release of its founder, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023.
In response, the federal government has taken a hardline stance. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Information Minister Atta Tarar have both warned that protests will not be permitted in the capital and that the state will use all necessary measures to maintain order. This follows a 37-page verdict from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which ruled that political parties do not have the right to occupy public roads or highways in a manner that obstructs citizens' access to essential services.
Security measures are being heightened across the country. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inspector General of Police has directed officers not to facilitate any rallies heading toward Islamabad, warning of disciplinary action for those who violate court orders. Meanwhile, Islamabad authorities have begun reviewing security at major entry and exit points. In anticipation of the march, police in the capital have already detained four PTI activists on various charges, including criminal intimidation and rioting.
