Pakistani cross‑border strikes kill 57 civilians in Afghanistan, UN report says
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented 399 civilian casualties in Afghanistan between 1 April and 30 June 2026, including 57 deaths and 342 injuries, attributing all of them to Pakistani security forces. The deadliest incident occurred on 28 June when Pakistani airstrikes in Paktya, Paktika and Kunar provinces killed 28 civilians and injured 189. Shelling in Kunar from 27‑29 April caused 99 casualties (8 killed, 91 injured). An unexploded ordnance explosion on 8 June in Barmal district, Paktika, killed seven civilians and injured six. Since the escalation in October 2025, UNAMA reports a total of 499 civilians killed and 1,216 wounded in cross‑border violence.
Pakistan’s military rejected the UN findings as “baseless”. Spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry said the operations targeted only hideouts of the Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and were carried out in self‑defence, insisting that those killed were militants. The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the strikes, accusing Pakistan of targeting civilian areas.
