Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emergency rule suspends PTI-led provincial government

The Pakistani federal government has imposed emergency and governor’s rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, suspending the elected administration led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The decision, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari on October 11, transfers executive authority to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and an advisory council.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif defended the intervention, stating the government was “compelled” to act due to a deteriorating security situation and a lack of cooperation from the provincial administration regarding counter-terrorism operations. He argued the move was necessary to prevent bloodshed and instability. PML-N President Nawaz Sharif also supported the action, suggesting the government should have intervened sooner to address governance and security challenges.

Opposition leaders have condemned the move as unconstitutional. Mahmood Khan Achakzai of the opposition vowed a peaceful, joint struggle to protect parliamentary sovereignty and demanded free elections. Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari indicated that emergency rule could be lifted if the PTI engages with the federal government on a united anti-terrorism policy. The suspension of the provincial government has raised concerns regarding democratic norms and may impact Pakistan’s trade privileges with the European Union.
