Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif announces Rs160 billion KP development package
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a Rs160 billion federal development package for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) during a visit to Peshawar. The funding is intended to address infrastructure, public welfare, and security needs. According to provincial adviser Samar Haroon Bilour, 70 per cent of the funds will be allocated to the province's merged districts, with the remaining 30 per cent for other districts.
The announcement follows the imposition of emergency rule and governor’s rule in KP on October 11, a move the federal government says was necessary due to intensified militant attacks and a lack of cooperation from the previous PTI-led administration. The emergency transferred executive powers from the elected provincial government to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and an 11-member advisory council.
During meetings with the Federal Apex Committee and the Area Representative Development Council, the Prime Minister pledged to strengthen provincial police and counterterrorism capabilities, including the completion of Safe City projects. He also committed to ensuring food security by providing adequate wheat supplies and preventing hoarding. Additional educational initiatives were announced, including the establishment of Danish schools in Bajaur, Lakki Marwat, and Chitral, and a technical institute in Dera Ismail Khan.
