Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif warns India over Indus Waters Treaty
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stern warning to India regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, stating that every drop of Pakistan’s allocated water is a ‘red line’ and any violation will trigger a direct response.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Yadgar-e-Fatah monument in Islamabad, Sharif criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the treaty. He emphasized that while Pakistan seeks peace and regional stability, its desire for peace should not be mistaken for weakness. He warned that any future challenges to Pakistan’s sovereignty or water rights would be met with a response stronger than the military confrontation that occurred in May 2025.
Sharif also addressed broader regional issues, reaffirming support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and calling on the Afghan government to ensure its territory is not used for terrorism against Pakistan. Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s growing defense cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye and expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in mediating the May 2025 ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
