Pakistan political leaders debate creation of new provinces

Political leaders and analysts in Pakistan are engaged in a heated debate regarding the potential creation of new administrative provinces to improve governance. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, speaking at a National Policy Dialogue, emphasized that any governance reset or administrative restructuring must occur strictly within the parameters of the 1973 Constitution and should be based on public opinion and political consensus.

Opinions on the matter vary significantly across political lines. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has expressed strong opposition to any division of Sindh, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) maintains a cautious stance, stating that a formal decision will only be made once a concrete proposal is presented in Parliament. Meanwhile, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has called for a national consensus, arguing that the issue should focus on public convenience and administrative efficiency rather than political confrontation.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman has also called for a national-level political dialogue to resolve various systemic issues, including provincial rights and the management of mineral resources. Federal Adviser Rana Sanaullah noted that while the topic is widely discussed in media and seminars, no formal bill or resolution has yet been introduced in Parliament to officially initiate the process.
