Pakistan administrative restructuring debate

Debate has emerged in Pakistan regarding the potential creation of new administrative provinces and units to improve governance and resource allocation.

Usman Shaukat, President of the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has advocated for the discussion to move away from political considerations toward economic and developmental goals. He argued that the focus should be on addressing regional deprivation and ensuring that any restructuring is accompanied by empowered local governments capable of delivering services.

Political leaders have expressed varying perspectives on the issue. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that any restructuring must adhere to the 1973 Constitution and be based on political consensus. While the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) opposes the division of Sindh, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is awaiting a formal parliamentary proposal. Other leaders, including Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, have called for national dialogue to ensure administrative efficiency and the protection of provincial rights. As of the latest reports, no formal bill has been introduced in Parliament to initiate the process.
