Pakistan power consumers face potential July bill increase

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise electricity tariffs by 82 paisas per unit under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment mechanism for May. The agency cited an average fuel cost of Rs 9.25 per unit and seeks to recover the extra expense, which could add roughly Rs 12 billion to consumer bills.

NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on 30 June to review the proposal, fuel cost data and generation expenses before deciding whether the adjustment will be passed on to households and businesses in July. If approved, the increase would affect millions of Pakistani consumers already coping with high inflation and rising utility costs.
