Pakistan shifts from regional mediator to defense ally

Pakistan is facing challenges in its attempt to balance roles as a regional mediator and a member of strategic defense alliances. While Islamabad previously attempted to facilitate talks between the United States and Iran—resulting in the June Geneva Agreement and a 14-point accord—these efforts failed to secure lasting peace in West Asia.

Pakistan's position has shifted toward active defense commitments that contrast with its mediation efforts. Under the September 2025 Makkah Joint Defence Pact, Pakistan pledged to treat an attack on Saudi Arabia as an attack on itself. Turkey has since joined this alliance. Following these commitments, Pakistan has reportedly delivered warnings to Iran to restrain Houthi allies from attacking Saudi territory. A secretariat for the alliance has been established in Riyadh, with Pakistan expected to provide the first Secretary-General.
