Pakistan urges India to engage on Indus Water Treaty

Pakistan has called on India to engage constructively regarding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) following India's rejection of a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesperson, Tahir Andrabi, stated that Islamabad remains committed to implementing the 1960 treaty ‘in letter and spirit’ and will take all possible measures to ensure the tribunal's decision is fully implemented.

The dispute intensified after India decided to place the treaty in abeyance, a move following the Pahalgam terror attack in April of last year. India has categorically rejected the arbitration process, describing the tribunal as ‘illegally-constituted’ and asserting that its establishment constitutes a grave violation of the treaty. New Delhi maintains that the body has no jurisdiction over its sovereign decision to suspend the agreement.

The disagreement was also noted during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where both nations presented opposing views on water sharing and security.
