Pakistan urges Taliban to act against terrorist groups at UN Security Council
At a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York, Pakistan’s permanent representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed warned that Afghanistan remains a safe haven for terrorist organisations such as the Tehrik‑i‑Taliban Pakistan, Baloch Liberation Army, ISIL‑K and others. He called on the Taliban to carry out concrete, verifiable operations against these groups.
Ahmed cited that more than 5,300 terror attacks occurred in Pakistan during 2025, killing over 1,200 people, and noted that militants have accessed modern weapons and drones left from foreign forces’ withdrawal. He referred to a VBIED attack on a police post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 9 May, which killed 15 officers and was planned by elements based in Afghanistan.
The Pakistani envoy criticised the Taliban’s reluctance to act, saying it threatens regional stability and undermines Pakistan’s right to self‑defence. He urged the implementation of the Doha Process and the Mosaic Action Plan, highlighted inadequate humanitarian funding for Afghanistan, and called for transparent resettlement of Afghan refugees.
