Pakistan urges UN Security Council to press India over Indus Waters Treaty
Pakistan has appealed to the United Nations Security Council, urging it to pressure India to comply with the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and abide by recent rulings from the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar warned that any interference with the flow of waters legally belonging to Pakistan could lead to significant humanitarian, economic, and security consequences. The appeal follows an August 31 PCA ruling which affirmed that the IWT remains binding on both nations and cannot be suspended or terminated.
The PCA has also issued interim measures regarding construction at the Ratle Hydro-Electric Plant while a neutral expert determines if the project design complies with treaty obligations. Dar called on India to resume all mandated cooperation, including data sharing and consultation, and to refrain from actions that manipulate water flows.
