Pakistan's anti-terror crackdown on PoK protest sparks human‑rights concerns

Pakistan designated the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) a proscribed organisation on June 6, accusing it of terrorism and related offences ahead of a planned peaceful protest on June 9. Authorities imposed a region‑wide communications blackout on June 5, cutting mobile internet, broadband and voice services until June 12.

Security forces deployed heavily in Rawalakot, Poonch district, and clashes erupted on June 7 between police, federal reinforcements and JAAC supporters. Local sources reported 150‑200 casualties, while official figures were lower; fatalities occurred among both civilians and security personnel. Numerous JAAC leaders and activists, including Sohrab Barkat, were arrested.

The crackdown has raised broader concerns about political representation, the use of anti‑terror legislation against grassroots movements, and the restriction of communication and documentation rights in Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir.
