Pakistan Balochistan insurgent attacks kill over 40 security personnel

In early July 2026 a wave of coordinated insurgent attacks swept Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but sparsely populated province. Between 4 July and 8 July, at least 42 police officers and soldiers were killed in three separate incidents, including a deadly assault on a police post in Ziarat district, an ambush on a security convoy in the Bela‑Winder area, and clashes in Karachi linked to the unrest. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for some of the strikes, while Pakistan’s military also blamed the Afghan Taliban for providing sanctuary and support.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif travelled to Quetta on 9 July, condoled with the victims’ families and vowed that “the war against terrorism will continue until the last terrorist in Pakistan is eliminated.” Security forces responded with clearance operations that the military says killed 54 militants. The Pakistani government accused India of supplying weapons and financing to the separatists and warned that militants were using Afghan territory to launch attacks.

The violence has heightened tensions along Pakistan’s borders with Afghanistan and Iran and underscored the fragile security situation in a province rich in natural resources but plagued by a long‑standing separatist insurgency.
