Pakistan's peace diplomacy abroad contrasts with Kashmir crackdown

Pakistan is portraying itself as a mediator in international disputes, with Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir leading talks between the United States and Iran and receiving public praise from former President Donald Trump. At the same time, the military is conducting a harsh crackdown on civilians in Pakistan‑occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where more than 50 people have been killed and hundreds injured. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif described the protesters as “enemies of the state” and said they are in the same category as India. A report in the European Times noted, “Pakistan presents itself as an advocate of dialogue and peace on the global stage, while its actions at home are increasingly defined by violence.” The contrast between the external diplomatic façade and internal repression has been highlighted by multiple observers.
