Palacio de Bellas Artes hosts first major Kati Horna retrospective
The Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City has inaugurated ‘Kati Horna. Lo insólito es lo cotidiano’, the first major individual retrospective of the Hungarian-Mexican photographer at the venue. The exhibition features approximately 205 pieces, including photographs, sculptures, dolls, and documents, tracing her career from her formative years in Europe through her establishment in Mexico.
Curated by Yolanda Guasch Marí and Daniel Garza Usabiaga, the collection explores Horna’s diverse body of work, which ranges from documenting the effects of the Spanish Civil War to her engagement with surrealism, maternity, and the gothic. The exhibition highlights her role as a central figure among exiled artists in Mexico, noting her creative connections to figures such as Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington.
The retrospective is noted by cultural authorities as a way to address a historical debt to an artist whose work, while recognized by specialists, had not previously received a solo exhibition of this scale at the country’s premier museum. The show is scheduled to remain open to the public until February 7, 2027.
