Kati Horna retrospective at Palacio de Bellas Artes
Overview
The Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City has inaugurated ‘Kati Horna. Lo insólito es lo cotidiano’, the first major retrospective dedicated to the Hungarian-Mexican photographer, photojournalist, and visual artist.
Organized by the Mexican Secretariat of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), the exhibition features approximately 205 pieces, including photographs, sculptures, dolls, documents, and correspondence. The collection is organized into four sections: her formative years in Europe, her wartime testimony regarding the Spanish Civil War, her photographic series and documentary records, and her creative networks.
The exhibition highlights Horna’s connections to other exiled artists and figures such as Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, and Pedro Friedeberg. Cultural authorities have noted the exhibition as a way to address a historical debt to an artist whose work had not previously received a solo exhibition of this scale at the venue. The show is scheduled to remain open to the public until February 7, 2027.
