Palangka Raya extends emergency status amid spreading forest fires

The Palangka Raya municipal government has extended the emergency response status for forest and land fires (karhutla) until November 9, 2026. This decision follows a significant increase in fire incidents, with the Palangka Raya Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reporting 909 occurrences and a total burned area of approximately 1,450 hectares since June 1, 2026.

Recent fires have spread toward office areas and extra-high voltage power transmission towers (SUTET) on Jalan Giobos 14. Firefighters have faced challenges due to dry land conditions and a lack of water sources, necessitating the use of boreholes to combat the flames. The smoke from these fires has contributed to a rise in respiratory infections (ISPA), with cases in Palangka Raya reaching 11,276.

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf confirmed that victims of these fires are entitled to government assistance, categorizing them as victims of non-natural disasters. While specific aid amounts have not been detailed, the Minister stated that support will be provided for those injured or deceased, as well as assistance for household empowerment for affected families.
