Palangka Raya fire and forest fire incidents

Overview

In early October 2026, Palangka Raya, Indonesia, experienced two separate fire incidents involving a vacant wooden house destroyed by explosions and a swiftlet nest facility consumed by flames. By late October, the situation escalated as forest and land fires (karhutla) increased significantly. The Palangka Raya municipal government extended the emergency response status until November 9, 2026, following reports of 909 fire occurrences and approximately 1,450 hectares burned since June. Recent fires have threatened office areas and high-voltage power transmission towers. The resulting smoke has led to a rise in respiratory infections, with 11,276 cases reported. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf confirmed that victims are entitled to government assistance as victims of non-natural disasters. By late October, authorities maintained the emergency status despite recent rainfall. While three days of rain helped moisten peatlands and extinguished some hotspots, officials warned that precipitation has been uneven. Heri Pauzi, Head of Prevention and Preparedness at the Palangka Raya BPBD, stated that personnel and equipment remain on high alert to prevent a resurgence if weather conditions become hot and dry again. Monitoring efforts are currently concentrated in the Jekan Raya, Sebangau, Bukit Batu, and Pahandut districts. On November 4, 2026, the Ministry of Environment reported that air quality in Palangka Raya reached hazardous levels, with an Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) score of 1,010 due to PM2.5 pollutants. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected approximately 580 hotspots across Central Kalimantan. The Ministry has advised vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, to remain indoors. Recent reports indicate that the fires have destroyed 12 residential homes and damaged public infrastructure, including street lighting and traffic signs. In response, the Palangka Raya city government has allocated 180 million IDR in rehabilitation funds, providing 15 million IDR to each affected household.
