Italy healthcare workers face rising violence and systemic shortages

Italy is facing a surge in violence against healthcare workers and emergency responders. In Foggia, an ambulance crew was intercepted and assaulted with punches, kicks, and threats while responding to an emergency. Similarly, in Pavia, a nurse was assaulted at the San Matteo Polyclinic, and in Perugia, a woman was arrested after attacking medical staff with a knife. In Palermo, a patient caused significant damage to a triage station and attempted to attack staff, highlighting chronic overcrowding issues.

Beyond physical violence, the Italian healthcare system is grappling with structural crises. In Gela, the Vittorio Emanuele Hospital is facing severe doctor shortages, prompting regional health official Marcello Caruso to propose emergency procedures and increased staffing. In Battipaglia, labor unions have criticized management for closing entire departments and transferring staff without clear planning. Meanwhile, in Messina, the Fogliani hospital is nearing the completion of a 2-million-euro emergency room renovation aimed at improving urgent care organization.

Other notable incidents include a 69-year-old man in Ventimiglia who was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury after being assaulted by a group of minors, and a fatal scooter accident in Bordighera that claimed the life of a 28-year-old man.
