Italy faces blood donation shortages during summer months

Various regions in Italy are facing blood supply challenges, particularly during the summer months when donations typically decline. In Palermo, the Asp has launched extraordinary collection drives using mobile blood collection units at the Ingrassia and Cimino hospitals to address shortages that affect vulnerable and chronic patients.

In Sardinia, the association Thalassa Azione is providing special t-shirts to donors at the San Martino hospital to encourage participation and raise awareness. Similarly, in Cerveteri, a blood drive is organized to support the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital.

Other local initiatives highlight the impact of individual contributions. In Argenta, the Avis association reported over 1,300 donations in a single year. In Reggio Calabria, a military member successfully donated a rare blood type to a young patient, preventing the need to source blood from northern Italy. Medical professionals emphasize that while donations drop in August, the need for blood remains constant for oncology patients undergoing surgery or chemotherapy.
