Sicily allocates over 17 million euros to fishing and aquaculture sectors

The Sicilian Regional Government has launched a call for applications to provide over 17 million euros in compensation to fishing and aquaculture companies. These funds aim to offset increased production costs caused by rising fuel prices linked to the crisis in the Middle East. The total amount includes 12.1 million euros from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEAMPA 2021-2027) and an additional 5 million euros from the regional budget.

Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Assessor Luca Sammartino described the measure as a concrete intervention for a sector vital to Sicily's economy and identity. Eligible operators, including small-scale artisanal fishers, can apply via an online platform between October 1 and October 10.

Separately, Sicilian transporters have expressed significant frustration over rising diesel costs and delayed government support. Salvatore Bella, coordinator of the Sicilian transporters committee, warned of potential blockades at all Sicilian ports if promised regional and national measures, such as the 'Sea Modal Shift' (marebonus) payments, are not fulfilled.
