Palermo: Parents investigated after 4-year-old dies of suspected diphtheria FAST-MOVING

Authorities in Palermo have launched an investigation into the death of 4-year-old Anna Rosa Bartolotta, who died from suspected diphtheria. The child's parents, Emanuele Bartolotta and Manuela Maggio, are being investigated for manslaughter by omission due to their decision not to administer mandatory vaccinations. The parents reportedly believed that vaccinations caused autism in a relative.

Medical experts note that the tragedy has triggered a 10% increase in diphtheria vaccine requests to pediatricians in the region over a 48-hour period. A 4-year-old cousin of the deceased has also tested positive for the disease but is showing clinical improvement after receiving treatment.

Public health data highlights concerns regarding vaccination coverage in Sicily. According to Ministry of Health figures from 2024, the hexavalent vaccination rate for children born in 2022 in Sicily was 85.13%, significantly lower than the Italian national average of 94.5%. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, August 26, at the Palermo Policlinico to definitively confirm the cause of death.
