The family maintains they informed staff of the child’s vaccination status during that first visit, and the investigation aims to determine if the medical response to the child’s deteriorating condition was adequate. Autopsy results have since confirmed that a severe and widespread infection caused the child's death.

On the public health front, a Sicilian regional task force determined that recent diphtheria cases in Palermo involving two children from the same family do not constitute an epidemic cluster. However, officials described the situation as a “bell toll” regarding declining vaccination rates influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this, the Sicilian Health Department is implementing extraordinary measures to recover coverage for children aged 0 to 6. As of September 1, emergency room operators have gained access to the Regional Unique Vaccination Registry (Avur) to verify immunization status and identify specific districts requiring targeted interventions.
