Palestine Prisoners Studies Center reports deaths in Israeli custody

The Palestine Prisoners Studies Center has reported that 91 identified Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody over the past three years. The center warned that the fate of dozens of other detainees from the Gaza Strip remains unknown, suggesting they may have died during the initial months of the current conflict.

According to the center, approximately 9,500 Palestinians are currently held in harsh conditions, with more than one-third detained without formal charges. The report highlights systemic issues including torture, starvation, medical neglect, and the use of food and sleep as leverage by Shin Bet officers to extract confessions.

Access to detainees has been severely restricted, with the center noting that visits from the International Committee of the Red Cross have been blocked since October 2023. This isolation prevents independent monitoring of prison conditions. Additionally, an unnamed prisoner reported that prison authorities removed beds from cells during Ramadan, forcing inmates to sleep on iron frames, leading to significant health issues.
