Palestinian doctor Hossam Abu Safiya moved to solitary confinement in Nafha prison

The family of Palestinian physician Hossam Abu Safiya announced that Israeli prison authorities transferred him to solitary confinement at Nafha prison on 3 June. The family described the move as “a serious escalation” and a new punitive measure, warning that the isolation threatens his health and safety.

Abu Safiya, a former director of the Kamel Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arrested on 27 December 2024 during an Israeli raid on the hospital. Since his detention he has reportedly suffered chronic heart disease, hypertension, scabies, severe weight loss of about 25 kg, and repeated physical and psychological abuse. His advocates have filed an appeal with the Israeli Supreme Court and called on the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene and ensure he receives adequate medical care.

Human‑rights groups say the case illustrates a pattern of targeting Palestinian medical personnel during the Gaza conflict and stress that continued denial of treatment could endanger his life.
