Palestinian Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya Appears Before Israeli Supreme Court

Hussam Abu Safiya, a prominent Palestinian physician captured by the Israeli military in Gaza in late 2024, appeared by video link at Israel's Supreme Court on June 10. He has been held without charge for more than 500 days, during which his family reports a weight loss of about 40 kg, fractured ribs and other injuries. Lawyer Nasser Odeh said Abu Safiya was handcuffed, shackled and placed in solitary confinement, receiving treatment for severe neck and back pain and vision problems. Israeli authorities have accused him of Hamas affiliation but have offered no evidence. Abu Safiya is one of 14 doctors and among nearly 400 Palestinian healthcare workers detained during Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza.

Human‑rights groups allege the doctors are denied adequate food, medical care and are subjected to abuse, claims the Israeli Prison Service rejects. The court is expected to rule on the appeal later in the day.
