Palestinian doctors face detention amid Gaza healthcare crisis

Human rights organizations and medical groups are calling for the immediate release of Palestinian doctors and healthcare workers detained by Israeli authorities. Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) has filed a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court seeking the release of 14 specific doctors and all Gaza healthcare workers held illegally or arbitrarily.

Advocates argue that these detentions exacerbate the collapse of the healthcare system in Gaza, which has been severely damaged by the ongoing conflict. PHRI reports that hundreds of essential medical workers have been arrested since the start of the war, a move they claim is intended to prevent the rehabilitation of Gaza’s medical infrastructure.

Supporting the initiative, the organization MEDU and the Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII have joined the appeal, titled ‘Caring is not a crime’. They emphasize that medical personnel must be protected under international humanitarian law and that their absence prevents the delivery of critical care to a population in immense need.
