Palestinian journalists face heavy casualties and media infrastructure destruction
On the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists, reports indicate a heavy toll on media professionals since October 2023. Data from the Government Media Office (GMO) in Gaza and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reveal that at least 262 journalists and media workers have been killed, including 26 women. The majority of these fatalities occurred in the Gaza Strip, with one reported in the West Bank.
Beyond fatalities, the reports document extensive violations against the press. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has recorded approximately 3,983 violations, including 188 arrests and numerous instances of physical assault, such as being targeted by gunfire or tear gas. Additionally, the conflict has caused massive destruction to media infrastructure; reports state that 187 press institutions and offices have been destroyed or closed, and 140 homes belonging to journalists have been damaged or destroyed.
Financial losses to the media sector are estimated at approximately $800 million. Despite these challenges, 143 media outlets continue to operate within the Gaza Strip. The GMO has called upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the targeting of journalists.
