Palestinian Legislative Election Set for November 2026 Amid Occupation and Reform Hopes

After almost two decades without a legislative vote, the Palestinian territories are preparing to hold elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council on 28 November 2026. The election, the first parliamentary poll in roughly 19 years, is intended to fill the council that drafts laws and oversees the government.

Officials describe the vote as a crucial test of the political system’s legitimacy and a potential catalyst for political, administrative and economic reforms. Fatah’s Taysir Nasserallah called it a constitutional right and a chance to revive democratic life. Human‑rights media director Dr. Omar Rahal emphasized that the election could restore public confidence in institutions, while economist Dr. Haitham Daraghmeh warned that the economy—marked by high unemployment, poverty and financial restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation—will be the most pressing challenge for any newly elected government.

The election is occurring amid ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, a deepening economic crisis and persistent political division, raising questions about whether the new council can effectively address governance, transparency and service delivery for Palestinians.
