Palestinian factions prepare for legislative elections in November

Palestinian political factions are preparing for upcoming legislative elections, which are reportedly scheduled for November 28. The electoral process aims to renew political legitimacy and unify Palestinian institutions following the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas leadership stated it is communicating with all factions to reach a consensus on the election process and seeks to avoid unilateral decision-making. The movement is navigating recent changes to election laws, specifically regarding the requirement for candidate lists to adhere to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) program, which includes recognizing international legitimacy and previous agreements. Hamas expressed interest in reforming the PLO and the National Council to ensure their programs align with current national requirements.

Former Prime Minister Mohammed Ashtia, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, described the electoral path as “irreversible,” emphasizing the need to unify the West Bank, Gaza, and Jerusalem under a single political system. He noted that while the European Union encourages these reforms, the United States may not be fully enthusiastic about the process. The elections are viewed as a critical test for Palestinian political unity and institutional stability.
