Palestinian prisoner organizations report 92 deaths in custody over three years
Palestinian prisoner organizations reported that 92 identified prisoners have died in custody over the last three years. This figure represents approximately 28% of all prisoner deaths recorded since 1967. Organizations also noted that the fate of dozens of detainees from the Gaza Strip remains unknown due to enforced disappearance.
As of early October, approximately 9,300 individuals are held in Israeli prisons. This population includes 118 prisoners serving life sentences, 91 women, 350 children, 3,101 administrative detainees, and 1,419 individuals classified as “unlawful combatants,” including detainees from Syria and Lebanon. Data indicates that 49% of prisoners are held without formal charges or trials.
Since the start of the current conflict, over 26,000 arrests have been recorded in the West Bank, with thousands more in Gaza. Detentions have targeted various demographics, including more than 800 women and over 2,000 children in the West Bank. Organizations called for increased international pressure to abolish the death penalty and ensure the protection of detainees' lives is treated as an international responsibility.
