Israeli detention of Palestinians
Overview
Since 2023, Israeli authorities have arrested more than 24,000 Palestinians, with recent data indicating over 26,000 arrests in the West Bank since the start of the current conflict, alongside thousands more in Gaza. As of early October 2026, approximately 9,300 individuals are held in Israeli prisons. This population includes 118 prisoners serving life sentences, 91 women, 350 children, 3,101 administrative detainees, and 1,419 individuals classified as ‘unlawful combatants.’ Data indicates that 49% of prisoners are held without formal charges or trials.
Palestinian prisoner organizations reported that 92 identified prisoners have died in custody over the last three years, representing approximately 28% of all prisoner deaths recorded since 1967. The fate of dozens of detainees from the Gaza Strip remains unknown due to enforced disappearance.
Prison conditions have reportedly deteriorated, with detainees documenting severe weight loss, the spread of skin diseases such as scabies, and physical abuse involving rubber bullets, gas, dogs, and cigarette burns. Concerns have been raised regarding the treatment of female detainees, including allegations of repression and denial of medical care.
Detention of media workers continues to escalate. Journalist Bushra al-Tawil has had her administrative detention renewed for an additional four months; the Palestinian Prisoners Club reports she has been held in isolation for approximately 50 days at Ofer prison and has faced physical abuse. Other recent judicial actions include the detention of journalists Muath Amarna and Sabri Jibrin, and the extension of Niqaa Bajis Hamed’s detention by military courts.
