Palm oil projected to meet 60 percent of global vegetable oil demand by 2050

Palm oil is projected to meet approximately 60 percent of the global demand for vegetable oils by 2050. This surge in demand is driven by a growing global population, rising incomes, and widespread industrialization.

By 2050, the total global requirement for vegetable oils is expected to reach 300 million tons, a significant increase from the estimated 215.6 million tons produced in 2025. Beyond food use, vegetable oils are increasingly utilized for biomaterials, petrochemical substitution, and alternative energy sources. Tungkot Sipayung, Founder and Executive Director of the Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI), noted that Indonesia has a major opportunity to play a strategic role in meeting this rising global supply.
